Excuses, Excuses

Today was supposed to be the “Slurpee Summit” at the White House between President Obama and the Republican leadership. But the GOP bailed, citing “scheduling conflicts,” so the meeting has been pushed off until the week after Thanksgiving.

But it turns out that the GOP is telling anyone who will listen that they’re actually afraid of being sandbagged by President Obama and that he’ll run away with the summit just like he “crashed” the GOP retreat last winter in Baltimore.

Obama’s last-minute decision to address the House GOP retreat – and the one-sided televised presidential lecture many Republicans decried as a political ambush – has left a lingering distrust of Obama invitations and a wariness about accommodating every scheduling request emanating from the West Wing, aides tell POLITICO.

“He has a ways to go to rebuild the trust,” said a top Republican Hill staffer. “The Baltimore thing was unbelievable. There were [House Republicans] who only knew Obama was coming when they saw Secret Service guys scouting out the place.”

Okay, except that’s not exactly what happened, and as Josh Marshall at TPM relates, President Obama was invited by the Republicans to come to their confab to the point that Rep. Mike Pence (R-IN) was putting out a press release where he practically licked his chops in anticipation of cornering the president and really giving him a good going-over. It was only after Mr. Obama made them look like fools did the story get revised to make it look like the GOP got sandbagged.

Honestly, when I was a teacher in middle school I heard more original and mature excuses from my kids for their epic failures than what these whiny and petulant critters can come up with. And those kids were making it up as they went along.
