According to Politico, President Obama’s biggest mistake in his term so far hasn’t been failing to communicate his message over the din of the Right Wing Noise Machine; it’s been ignoring the Right People.

In his effort to change Washington, Obama has failed to engage Washington and its institutions and customs, leaving him estranged from the capital’s permanent power structure — right at the moment when Democrats say he must rethink his strategy for cultivating and nurturing relations with key constituencies ahead of 2012.

In other words, he and the First Lady haven’t been to enough Georgetown cocktail parties and kissed up to the real power brokers: the ones who know all the right caterers.

This happened to the Carters and the Clintons when they came to town; the Washington permanent power structure acted as if the Clampetts had just rolled into town and settled into their mansion with the ce-ment pond. This time around, it’s the help coming in through the front door. Well, did you evah!

It’s amazing that this nation got to be a superpower when you realize that most of the people who run it are not much more mature than your average middle-school clique.
