I do remember hearing the news that John Lennon had been killed thirty years ago. Charles Kurault, on the CBS Morning show, woke me up with “It’s my sad duty to report that John Lennon was shot and killed last night.”

Murder never makes sense, and his even less. He never harmed a soul and he brought joy and music to millions of people, and those who disliked him for his advocacy and his unfettered openness about love and thumbing his nose at the Establishment only made themselves look all the more like the fools and the prudes that they were.

It is hard to imagine what the world would have been like had we not had him with us for only those forty years. It’s hard to believe it’s been thirty since he’s been gone, leaving behind a lot of good sounds and the simple truth that all you need is love.
