But They’re Not Racists

There’s a special election for Congress coming up in Los Angeles between Democrat Janice Hahn and Republican Craig Huey. A right-wing PAC called Turn Right America has come out with an ad to contribute to the civil discourse:

Talking Points Memo has the background on the group and the people who made the ad.

The spot is produced by Ladd Ehlinger, Jr., best known for his wildly popular Dale “Don’t Give A Rip” Peterson campaign video in the 2010 race for Alabama secretary of agriculture. Turn Right USA, the sponsor, is a brand new political action committee which only filed its paperwork with the Federal Election Commission on Monday. The paperwork indicates that Turn Right USA intends to operate as a so-called “super PAC,” capable of raising funds in unlimited amount, but will not use those funds to directly support federal candidates or committees.

Steve M at No More Mister Nice Blog would like every Republican to have to answer for this ad, and if they don’t he wants to know why. He wants it to be as big an issue as the Anthony Weiner story.

From his mouth to Dog’s ears. It won’t happen. Other than the blogosphere, this is a nothing story to the national press because it doesn’t involve sex, bulging shorts, or white women being kidnapped or entering rehab. The obligatory response from the Republicans will be A) we haven’t seen the ad, B) it’s a local race in California, C) it’s an isolated incident from an independent group that has absolutely no connection with the GOP, D) tax cuts.

Mr. Ehlinger defended his ad:

Before you charge racism at the ad, consider her one line in the video: “It takes a different kind of person to speak the language.” By that she means, it takes black people to talk to black people.

Oh, well, that makes it all right then. Move along now; nothing to see here.
