Dangerous Ignorance – Ctd.

Sarah Palin doubled down on her Paul Revere revisionist history on Sunday, telling Chris Wallace on Fox News that she got it right the first time.

You know what? I didn’t mess up about Paul Revere. Here’s what Paul Revere did. He warned the Americans that “the British were coming, the British were coming.” And they were going to try to take our arms so got to make sure that, uh, we were protecting ourselves and, uhm, shoring up all of our ammunitions and our firearms so that they couldn’t take them.

But remember that the British had already been there — many soldiers — for seven years in that area. And part of Paul Revere’s ride… And it wasn’t just one ride. He was a courier. He was a messenger. Part of his ride was to warn the British that were already there that, “Hey. You’re not going to succeed. You’re not going to take American arms. You are not gonna beat our own well-armed, uh, persons, uh, individual private militia that we have. He did warn the British.

And in a shout-out, gotcha type of question that was asked of me, I answered candidly. And I know my American history.

Okay, aside from the fact that she’s mangled history again to fit her screw-up — if Mr. Revere was doing it to ring bells and yell, “Hey, you British, don’t mess with us!”, why was he doing it in stealth in the middle of the night? — she’s doing what any six-year-old would do when caught with their hand in the cookie jar: make up a fantastic story and divert attention by blaming it on “gotcha” journalism. (As Roger Ebert tweeted, “Exact wording of the Paul Revere Gotcha! question! ‘What have you been doing during your visit to Boston?'”)

Grown-ups admit their mistakes, apologize, and move on. Ms. Palin is far too immature to admit that she made a mistake. Caught dead to rights, she still won’t, despite the fact that if she did say something along the lines of, “You know what? I did mess up about Paul Revere, and I’m sorry about that. I guess I need to catch up on my reading, eh, Chris?”, the whole thing would have been a non-story.

But that’s not how she works. She’d rather use her version as a cudgel against the so-called “elites” who actually paid attention in Grade 6 American History class or even bothered to read the historical markers helpfully put up along the Freedom Trail in Boston so that she can turn it into a fund-raiser for SarahPAC.

Like I said, she’s not stupid; she knows how to exploit her own ignorance for fun and profit. Based on that plan, she’ll never go broke.
