The Wrong Coverage

I saw the Michele Bachmann Newsweek cover before I went to Stratford and didn’t get time to post about it.

In short, it’s stupid. All it does it rile up the right wing and make her the victim of the evul librul lamestream media in the eyes of her ardent followers. Even if the article in the magazine treats her fairly, the only thing the discussion will be about is the cover. But hey, it sells magazines, and that’s all they really care about anyway.

Joan Walsh says it not sexist and that men get the “crazy camera” treatment, too. That may easily be, but it misses the point. Sexist or not, it is focusing on everything that is wrong with mainstream media coverage: they’re going for the appearances and the surface and skipping what’s underneath — what she says and believes — and that’s what makes her truly scary.

As usual, Jon Stewart gets it.
