Gov. Jerry Brown of California has signed the state’s version of the DREAM Act.
Declaring the need to expand educational opportunity, Gov. Jerry Brown announced Saturday that he has signed legislation making illegal immigrants eligible to receive state financial aid to attend California universities and community colleges.
Brown said he signed the California Dream Act because it makes sense to allow high-achieving students access to college financial aid.
“Going to college is a dream that promises intellectual excitement and creative thinking,” Brown said in a statement. “The Dream Act benefits us all by giving top students a chance to improve their lives and the lives of all of us.”
This is the sort of thing that sets off the wing-nuts; they see something like the DREAM Act as giving aid and comfort to the “illegals.” Interestingly enough, it’s people like Rick Perry of Texas — a border state and home to a lot of children of undocumented people — who are (or were) in favor of such laws because they know that the kids themselves had nothing whatsoever to do with their parents’ choice to come into the country.
This presents yet another dilemma for the far-right sniveling bigots who, ironically enough, think all children are innocent victims unless they’re the wrong kind.
