Justice Inquiry

This will probably go nowhere, but at least someone is asking.

A group of House Democrats alleging that Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas violated ethics rules by failing to report his wife’s income called for a federal investigation into the matter today.

The group of 20 House Democrats led by Rep. Louise Slaughter (D-N.Y.) sent a letter to the U.S. Judicial Conference, the governing body for federal courts, saying that Thomas has failed to report the income of his wife, Virginia, who earned $700,000 from 2003 to 2007 while working at the Heritage Foundation, according to news reports.

Note the operative phrase “House Democrats,” and that’s why this will die aborning. Add to that the fact that the code of judicial ethics that covers every other lawyer and judge in the land does not cover the Supreme Court, and you come up with zilch.

I agree that judges and justices should be free from political coercion, but if it was a liberal justice whose spouse was raising money for, say, the Brookings Institution or championing the goals of MoveOn.org, do you think the Republicans would shrug it off? Yeah, me neither.
