Quote of the Day

Mayor Thomas Menino on the OWS demonstrations in Boston:

We will tolerate demonstrations, we will tolerate expressions of free speech but when it comes to civil disobedience we have a real issue with that, that is why we moved in last night. Civil disobedience doesn’t work for Boston; it doesn’t work for anyone.”

Hmm. Civil disobedience worked for John Adams and Samuel Adams; both from Boston. It also worked for Martin Luther, Martin Luther King, Mahatma Gandhi, Victoria Woodhull, and a lot of other people — including Lech Walesa, who’s dropping in on OWS to show his support — who took on the status quo and were willing to sacrifice their freedom and even their lives for their cause.

Oh, and there’s another example of civil disobedience from way back in history; some guy who peacefully took on an occupying force and was put to death for his troubles. Jesus, I can’t think of his name, but he was in all the papers. They wrote books about him and everything.

HT to Bryan.
