Ruth Marcus clutches her pearls and laments that the Obama 2012 campaign will be negative.
Forget hope and change. President Obama’s reelection campaign is going to be based on fear and loathing: fear of what a Republican takeover would mean, and loathing of whomever the Republican nominee turns out to be.
This is not going to be an uplifting campaign. It’s going to be a slugfest, and the slugging is only getting started.
Yeah, and…? What did she expect? Bambi meets Godzilla?
If there’s anything we have learned in the last three years, it is that the Republicans and the right-wing nutsery will go to any length, tell any lie, blow any dog whistle, demonize any group, and pick any nit to get back into power. The Republican candidates all make Ronald Reagan look like a Kenyan Muslim Socialist, and any one of them in office would turn the clock back to 1898 in terms of healthcare, women’s rights, gay rights, immigration, the environment, and taxes. It would be negligent and foolish not to expect the Obama campaign to point that out.
We know the Republicans will lie about President Obama, so he’s going to tell the truth about them. If that’s a “slugfest,” let us make the most of it.
