Onion Juice

This story is both hilarious and sad.

Meet John Fleming, the unfortunate Republican U.S. Representative from Louisiana who made that wonderful and all-too-common mistake of thinking that an Onion article was real and telling his Facebook followers to read it.

In this case, the story was a classic from May 2011 about how Planned Parenthood was opening an $8 million “abortionplex” in Kansas.

So not only did Rep. Fleming (who calls abortion a “pernicious evil”) or at least one of his staffers believe Kansas now has an abortion clinic with “coffee shops, bars, dozens of restaurants and retail outlets, a three-story nightclub, and a 10-screen multiplex theater,” but it’s not even recent fake news.

It’s hilarious in that it’s the Onion, but it’s sad that there are members of Congress who, even if they’re unaware of the history of the satirical site, would believe that Planned Parenthood would do something like that. I’m pretty sure that when Mr. Fleming’s office realized their mistake, they said, “Well, yeah, it’s a joke… but it’s possible.” As Steve M. notes:

But the notion is that liberals relish death, savor death, embrace death for its own sake — we feel about death, according to these folks, the way they feel about God, or Sarah Palin, or Trig, or puppies, or something equally wonderful.

They actually believe this about us.
