Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr. (1841-1935), associate justice of the United States Supreme Court:

Taxes are the price we pay for a civilized society.

Which explains why a lot of yokels carry on about the I.R.S. as if their home was in a tree.

  1. Also, taxes are what keep our Constitution in force. If your rights have been abrogated, you go to court. The courts are paid for by our taxes. No taxes = no courts = no Constitution = Somalia. All of our individual rights and liberties are a public good and must be paid for.
