Theodore Roosevelt, the last of the great progressive imperialists, was famous for quoting the West African saying: “Speak softly and carry a big stick; you will go far.”

A hundred years later, Jeb Bush — apparently picking up the cue from his big brother — is going with: “Use simple words and don’t waste time negotiating; nuance is for wimps.”

So far the Bush campaign can be summed up simply as “Work longer hours and bomb people.”
