One of the memes of this year-long campaign for president is an attack on “political correctness” in which Donald Trump and folks who emulate him (Ted Cruz, Marco Rubio, and the rest of the Me-Too chorus) rail against people who don’t like it when they use terms like “illegals” to describe undocumented immigrants or other words that offend minorities. (Yes, it’s always minorities that they get called out for offending, they claim, but call someone a racist and they get their tail all puffed up.)
What I think they’re really upset about is that they’re getting called out for being a dick. But the good news is that there’s a simple way to prevent that from happening: Don’t be a dick.
If four words of wisdom are too much — or too crude — how about three: Don’t be rude. Or two: Be nice. Or one — and it’s the hardest one: Think.
If you didn’t learn that in kindergarten, then it’s time you did.
