I don’t put a lot of hope in the fact that one Republican congressman from Michigan has come out for impeachment.
Michigan GOP Rep. Justin Amash said Saturday he had concluded President Donald Trump committed “impeachable conduct” and accused Attorney General William Barr of intentionally misleading the public.
Amash’s comments recommending Congress pursue obstruction of justice charges against Trump were the first instance of a sitting Republican in Congress saying the President’s conduct meets the “threshold for impeachment.”
The only glimmer that it offers is that up now the GOP has been rock-solid behind Trump. That’s more owing to their own self-interest than anything that could be considered loyalty: they want to get re-elected, and if it turned out that being against Trump would better their chances, they’d be lined up around the block to denounce him.
But don’t look for this one little crack to lead to erosion.
