Legend has it that this song was written during try-outs for “Hello, Dolly!” at the Fisher Theatre in Detroit in November 1963. They needed a smash ending for Act I, so Jerry Herman went up to his hotel room, wrote it, and played it for Gower Champion and Carol Channing in the middle of the night. They loved it, it went in, and the rest, as they say, is theatre history. At least that’s the legend. But that’s Jerry.
