Happy Friday

For a lot of people, especially in the public schools, today marks the beginning of winter holiday. Those words alone bring to mind a book, Winter Holiday, by Arthur Ransome in the “Swallows and Amazons” series that introduces two new characters for the series, the Callums. They are sister and brother; Dick is a scientist, and Dorothea is a writer, and casts them and the others on the shores of The Lake in the middle of an English winter in about 1932. They have adventures, of course, in the brutally cold and short-lived hours of daylight — not unlike Christmas in northern Michigan — and it’s a favorite of mine in the series.
