It seems weird to me that they don’t clean the centuries of black coal and diesel pollution off the exterior of this cathedral to return it to its original non-black look. The only clean bits are replacement stone parts. And while I’m bitching, they could do something with the packed in surroundings. A cathedral like Salisbury which is still surrounded by grass (minus the cows seen in Constable paintings unfortunately https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:John_Constable_017.jpg) is nicer that way. Everything is gray stone and urban stuff packed in around it. The railway station and bridge you see in the aerial shots isn’t going anywhere though. Still of course worth seeing. After I was there a couple days I later had a train transfer there and took a couple hours to check it out again.
